A Meditation for Today — Daily Biblical Reflections, Volume 1, by Henry J. Noel, Ph.D.

English edition · Volume 1

A Meditation for Today offers a biblical reading for every day of the year. Divided into four quarterly volumes, the journey brings together a main verse, a meditation, psalms, a further reading, a hymn, a prayer, and a thought to keep.

The fifty-two themes follow the main movements of the Christian walk: God’s presence, grace, forgiveness, and faith; relationships, service, justice, and community life; suffering, grief, hope, Christ’s return, and the new creation.

The book can be followed day by day or revisited freely according to the needs of the moment. It invites a peaceful faithfulness without making daily reading another source of guilt.

The collection comprises 365 meditations across 52 weeks and four quarterly volumes. All thirteen weeks of Volume 1 (Days 1–91) are available to read in English. Contact FleuveVie for information about digital editions and the availability of the other volumes.

Poems for reflection

Poetry, another path to meditation

A poem can open another way into Scripture, allowing a voice, an image, or a question to accompany our prayer.

Noa approaches an ancient house, a tambourine near the threshold where Jephthah waits.

Judges 11:29–40

Two Mirrors

The innocence of Noa and the weight of Jephthah’s vow: two faces turned toward a promise and its consequences.

Preface

Walking with God day after day

Spiritual life rarely takes shape only in extraordinary moments. It grows through ordinary days: on waking, at work, in our relationships, while we wait, in joy as in trial. There, in the midst of what actually makes up our existence, God comes to meet us.

A Meditation for Today grew from a desire to accompany this daily encounter. This first volume offers neither a method for mastering spiritual life nor a program for measuring our faithfulness. It offers ninety-one opportunities to pause, open Scripture, listen, and place our day in God’s presence.

The thirteen themes of this first volume lay the foundations of the Christian walk. The journey opens with new beginnings and God’s presence. It then leads us toward spiritual thirst, listening to His voice, Scripture, prayer, the God who knows us, grace, forgiveness, and faith. The closing weeks teach us to trust amid uncertainty, wait for God’s time, and receive the joy of salvation.

Each day opens with a main verse. A meditation then connects biblical truth with human experience. Psalms, further readings, and a hymn deepen the reflection. Finally, the prayer and the thought to keep invite readers to turn reading into a personal response.

It will not always be possible to give every part equal attention. Some days will offer a quiet stretch of time; others, only a few minutes. Sometimes it will be enough to hold on to a verse, an image, or an invitation. A very short prayer can become the beginning of a return to God.

The reading may also be interrupted. A few days may be missed, or a difficult period may break the rhythm. Readers should not believe the whole journey has then been lost. God’s faithfulness does not depend on the perfection of our calendar. We can always begin again, not to repay a debt, but to return to His presence.

These meditations do not offer simple explanations for every sorrow. They seek instead to open a space where pain can be named before God, where faith need not hide its questions, and where hope can remain alive without denying tears.

I therefore invite every reader to move forward with freedom, regularity, and grace, learning to recognize God in Scripture, but also in modest tasks, ordinary encounters, and quiet new beginnings.

We do not know what each of the days ahead will contain. Yet we can receive them with this assurance: none will lie beyond the presence of God.

Day after day, He goes before us, accompanies us, and calls us to walk with Him.

Henry J. Noel, Ph.D.

Author’s note and English reading note

The first volume offers a biblical meditation for each of the first ninety-one days of the yearly journey. Each day includes a main verse, a meditation, a reproduced psalm passage, further biblical reading references, a suggested hymn, a prayer, a thought to keep, and Personal Notes.

These meditations grew from reading, research, synthesis, pastoral adaptation, and writing based on Scripture and various biblical, theological, and spiritual resources. The author selected, reorganized, and harmonized them into a coherent annual journey. Interpretations more directly indebted to a particular author are identified in the volume’s “Sources and Acknowledgments” section.

The French source uses the public-domain Louis Segond Bible of 1910 unless otherwise indicated. The English main verses and reproduced psalm passages use the King James Version (KJV); they are not presented as literal translations of the Segond wording. The same psalm passages are retained using English verse numbering, which can differ from the French numbering. Where a Scripture quotation is shortened, substantial omissions should be indicated by ellipses or brackets.

The French edition draws its hymns from Hymnes et Louanges. The English readings use The Church Hymnal (1941), the Seventh-day Adventist hymnal named for this edition. Hymns are selected for their relationship to each meditation; some are direct counterparts of the French hymn, while others share its theme. The hymn numbers belong to this 1941 edition and must not be confused with those of the 1985 Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal.

Digital tools, including artificial intelligence tools, were used at certain stages of research, preliminary drafting, revision, and formatting of the French source. The author reviewed, corrected, harmonized, and approved its meditations and assumes editorial responsibility for the collection. The English readings are translated from the revised French Volume 1. Each reading also provides a Personal Notes space.

The yearly journey

A walk that connects faith and life

The themes do not form a rigid progression. Each meditation may be read on its assigned day or returned to later when its subject speaks to a particular experience.

01

Beginning in God’s presence

The thirteen weeks lay the foundations: new beginnings, God’s presence, spiritual thirst, listening, Scripture, prayer, grace, forgiveness, and faith.

02

Living faith in our relationships

The journey then turns to service, love of neighbor, sharing, welcome, reconciliation, humility, integrity, wisdom, and self-control.

03

Passing through difficult seasons

Suffering, fear, anxiety, rest, inner healing, darkness, and peace are approached without denying either questions or tears.

04

Serving, hoping, and completing the year

The closing weeks lead toward the Spirit, worship, the Sabbath, community, mission, justice, grief, Christ’s return, and the new creation.

Suggested hymns

Carry the meditation into music

The English readings draw on The Church Hymnal, published by Review and Herald in 1941 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Titles and numbers have been checked against that edition. The hymn for Day 1 is no. 81, “O God, Our Help in Ages Past,” which shares the meditation’s theme of God’s presence across the ages and draws on Psalm 90.

Find the hymn in the printed hymnal or a legally available music collection. View the 1941 Church Hymnal index ↗

Week 1 — A New Beginning

Day 1 — God Was Already There

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
— Genesis 1:1 (KJV)

The Bible opens with words of immense simplicity: “In the beginning God…” Before light appeared, before the earth took shape, before life awoke, God was there.

The same is true of our own beginnings. When we enter a new stage, we may feel as though we are stepping into unknown territory. We do not know what the days will bring. Some questions remain unanswered; some wounds have not yet healed. Yet God does not discover the path at the same time we do. He goes before us.

Beginning with God does not mean that everything will become easy or perfectly clear. It means we are not alone before the unknown. The One who brought light out of darkness can still reveal a direction where we see only confusion.

We therefore do not need to know the whole road today. It is enough to recognize God’s presence in this first step. Before our plans, our fears, and our decisions, He is already there.

Psalm

Psalm 90:1–2 (KJV)

1 Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. 2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

Suggested hymn

The Church Hymnal (1941), no. 81 — “O God, Our Help in Ages Past”

This hymn, based on Psalm 90, accompanies the meditation on God’s enduring presence.

Prayer

Eternal God, You were there before my first breath, and You already know the path opening before me. Enter my plans, my hesitations, and my hopes. When I cannot clearly see the road, remind me that Your presence goes before me. May this new beginning rest in You. Amen.

A thought to keep

Before each of my beginnings, God is already there.
