Volume 1 · Week 13 — The Joy of Salvation

Day 85 — The Joy of Being Known by God

Main verse

“[…] rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.”

— Luke 10:20 (excerpt) (KJV)

Meditation

The disciples return from a mission full of enthusiasm. They have seen lives transformed and found that even evil powers were subject to them in Jesus’ name. Their joy naturally rests on what they have just accomplished.

Jesus does not dismiss their wonder, but redirects its source: “Rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.”

Results can vary. One day our efforts bear fruit; another day they seem useless. Success encourages us, then a difficulty quickly reminds us of our limits. If our joy depends only on our performance, it will rise and fall with it.

Jesus invites his disciples to ground their joy in a more stable reality: belonging to God. Before their successes and beyond their failures, their names are known and their lives are welcomed into the Kingdom.

The joy of salvation does not mean considering ourselves superior to others or closing our eyes to the world’s suffering. It is the quiet gratitude of those who know they no longer need to earn their place with God.

We can serve zealously without asking our service to prove our worth. We can acknowledge our failures without concluding that we have become unworthy of love.

Today, our circumstances may give us no particular reason to rejoice. But one truth remains: God knows our name, calls us by his grace, and offers us a belonging that results can neither create nor destroy.

This joy may be quiet. Sometimes it resembles a deep peace more than a dazzling celebration: I am known, welcomed, and kept by God.

Psalm

Psalm 16:7–11 (KJV)

7 I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons. 8 I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. 10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

Prayer

Lord, thank you that my worth does not depend only on my successes. When results make me proud or failures discourage me, remind me that my name is known to you. Awaken in me the simple, deep joy of belonging to you. Amen.

A thought to keep

My deepest joy comes not from what I accomplish, but from belonging to God.
