Volume 1 · Week 5 — The Word That Gives Life
Day 29 — A Deeper Hunger
Main verse
“[…] Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
— Matthew 4:4 (excerpt) (KJV)
Meditation
Our bodies warn us when they need food. Spiritual hunger can be harder to recognize. It may hide behind restlessness, irritability, discouragement, or a constant search for distractions.
We then try to feed our souls with news, entertainment, projects, or the approval of others. These things may occupy our minds for a while, but they do not meet our deepest need.
Jesus tells us that human beings do not live by bread alone. We need a word that gives meaning to our existence, guides our choices, and reminds us who we are. The Bible nourishes us not because we quickly skim a few lines, but because through it God reaches our hearts.
Reading Scripture, then, is more than fulfilling a religious duty. It is coming to a table. We bring our hunger, our questions, and our weariness. We ask God to give us today the portion our souls need.
Before opening the Bible, we can simply pray, “Lord, I hunger for truth and life. Nourish me through your Word.”
Psalm
Psalm 119:20 (KJV)
20 My soul breaketh for the longing that it hath unto thy judgments at all times.

Prayer
Lord, awaken in me a hunger for your Word. Forgive me when I look elsewhere for what you alone can give. Nourish my soul, enlighten my understanding, and deepen my desire to know you. Amen.
A thought to keep
A hunger for the Word reveals a thirst that God alone can satisfy.
