Volume 1 · Week 5 — The Word That Gives Life
Day 30 — Coming to Meet God
Main verse
“And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. […]”
— Exodus 33:11 (excerpt) (KJV)
Meditation
Moses entered the tent of meeting while the people remained at a distance. The passage describes a remarkable closeness: the Lord spoke to him as a man speaks to his friend. This relationship took nothing away from God’s holiness or Moses’ responsibility; it gave their conversation a personal depth.
We can go through the motions of devotion without truly being present. Our eyes move across the text while our minds are already preparing for the next task. The encounter begins when we agree to be there, bringing our attention, our questions, and our willingness to listen.
The Scriptures make this closeness possible without reducing God to our impressions. They reveal his character, correct the images we have formed of him, and give words to our response. We read to know the One who speaks and to allow ourselves to be known by him.
Reading in this way sometimes requires us to slow down. A single verse may be enough if we receive it honestly: “Lord, what are you revealing about yourself? What do you want to illuminate or transform in me?” The answer may lead to comfort, confession, or a practical decision.
The value of our reading is therefore measured by more than the number of chapters covered. It can also be seen in a growing relationship: we learn to listen to God, respond to him, and walk with him as with a faithful friend.
Psalm
Psalm 27:8 (KJV)
8 When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek.

Prayer
Lord, keep me from reading coldly or distractedly. When I open the Scriptures, make me aware of your presence. Teach me to listen as a friend, receive your correction, and respond faithfully to what you show me. Amen.
A thought to keep
I come not only to read a text, but to meet the God who speaks to me.
