Volume 1 · Week 5 — The Word That Gives Life

Day 31 — “Open My Eyes”

Main verse

“Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.”

— Psalm 119:18 (KJV)

Meditation

We can read a page without really seeing it. Our eyes follow the words while our minds remain occupied elsewhere. Spiritual understanding requires more than intellectual attention: it needs God’s help.

The psalmist does more than open the book. He asks God to open his eyes. He recognizes that the wonders of the Word do not always reveal themselves to readers who are hurried or certain they already know everything.

We sometimes approach the Bible with our conclusions already settled. We look for a verse that confirms our opinion rather than a truth that can correct us. We read through the lens of our habits, our culture, and our preferences. That is why humility is essential.

The Holy Spirit does not replace careful study. He helps us understand, discern, and receive. He draws our attention to what we would rather avoid and brings to light a promise our discouragement kept us from seeing.

Before we read, let us ask, “Lord, show me what is actually written. Free me from my preconceived ideas and make me willing to receive your truth.”

Psalm

Psalm 119:27 (KJV)

27 Make me to understand the way of thy precepts: so shall I talk of thy wondrous works.

Prayer

Spirit of God, open my eyes and my understanding. Free me from superficial reading and from the temptation to seek only what proves me right. Lead me into truth and make my heart teachable. Amen.

A thought to keep

God can open my eyes to a truth I was looking at without yet seeing.
