Volume 1 · Week 5 — The Word That Gives Life
Day 33 — The Mirror That Transforms
Main verse
“[…] he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass.”
— James 1:23 (excerpt) (KJV)
Meditation
A mirror does not create what it reveals. It shows what was already there. God’s Word sometimes works like a mirror: it uncovers attitudes we did not want to see, confused motives, or wounds that still affect us.
This revelation can make us uncomfortable. We often prefer passages that comfort us to those that correct us. Yet biblical correction is not intended to humiliate us. God reveals what needs to change in order to lead us toward freedom.
James describes someone who looks at his face in a mirror, then goes away and immediately forgets what he has seen. We can do the same: be moved for a few moments, then return to our habits without making any decision.
Reading becomes transforming when we stay before the truth long enough to let it question us. After reading, let us ask, “What does this passage reveal about my heart? What attitude must I leave behind? What step is God inviting me to take?”
The Word shows us as we are, but it also reveals what grace can make of us.
Psalm
Psalm 139:23 (KJV)
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:

Prayer
Lord, give me courage to look at myself in the light of your Word. Reveal what needs to be healed, forgiven, or transformed. Do not let me forget what you show me. Carry out your work of grace within me. Amen.
A thought to keep
The Word does more than reveal who I am; it invites me to change.
