Volume 1 · Week 4 — Listening to God’s Voice

Day 27 — When God Seems Silent

Main verse

“How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD ? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?”

— Psalm 13:1 (KJV)

Meditation

There are seasons when we pray without sensing an answer. We seek direction, but the road remains dark. This silence can become heavier than the trial itself.

The Bible does not condemn this distress. The psalmist dares to ask, “How long?” His faith does not keep him from expressing his lack of understanding. Instead, he turns his pain into prayer.

God’s silence does not necessarily mean his absence. A seed may germinate underground for a long time before the smallest shoot appears. In the same way, God may be at work in depths still hidden from us.

While we wait, we are invited to remain at our post, like Habakkuk, and keep watching. We return to the truths we have already received: God is faithful, his grace endures, and our story does not escape his notice.

Faith does not always mean hearing an answer. Sometimes it means remaining turned toward God when nothing seems to respond.

Psalm

Psalm 62:7 (KJV)

7 In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.

Prayer

Lord, your silence is sometimes difficult for me. Receive my questions, my worries, and my weariness. When I do not understand what you are doing, help me lean on your character. Keep my heart turned toward you and sustain me as I wait. Amen.

A thought to keep

God’s silence does not necessarily mean his absence.
