Volume 1 · Week 4 — Listening to God’s Voice

Day 26 — Listening Also Means Obeying

Main verse

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”

— James 1:22 (KJV)

Meditation

In the Bible, listening means more than receiving information. True listening leads to a response.

We can accumulate sermons, readings, and biblical knowledge without letting the Word transform our habits. We hear about forgiveness but hold on to resentment. We admire generosity but keep our hands closed. We affirm our trust in God while allowing fear to guide our decisions.

Obedience is not an attempt to earn God’s love. It is the response of a heart that has heard that love. Because God welcomes us, we can walk in the direction he shows us.

It is not always necessary to wait for a new instruction. A word already understood may still need to be lived out: apologizing, putting an injustice right, caring for someone neglected, giving up a harmful habit, or faithfully fulfilling a responsibility.

Each act of obedience refines our listening. As we respond to the light we have received, we become more sensitive to the next.

Psalm

Psalm 119:32 (KJV)

32 I will run the way of thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my heart.

Prayer

Lord, keep me from a faith made only of words and good intentions. Give me courage to put what you teach me into practice. May my obedience grow from trust and love rather than fear. Amen.

A thought to keep

Listening to God becomes real when his word transforms my choices.
