Volume 1 · Week 4 — Listening to God’s Voice

Day 25 — Discerning the Still Small Voice

Main verse

“And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.”

— 1 Kings 19:12 (KJV)

Meditation

Elijah had witnessed the wind, the earthquake, and the fire. Yet the account makes clear that the Lord was not in these manifestations. The still small voice invited him to come out of his retreat and listen to a word that would set him on the right path again.

Discerning God’s voice requires more than seeking a powerful impression. Words may move us without coming from him; authentic guidance, by contrast, may come simply. Discernment examines what we hear in the light of Scripture, God’s character, and the fruit it produces in our lives.

The voice that comes from God does not always flatter our preferences. It may correct, comfort, call us to make amends, or direct us toward an unexpected service. It does not manipulate through fear or contradict truth already revealed.

We also learn discernment with others. Wise counsel from a mature person who respects the Word can confirm a conviction or reveal what our enthusiasm kept us from seeing. Time itself tests some directions.

God’s whisper is not weak. Its authority rests on its truth rather than its volume. An attentive heart recognizes this voice, examines it humbly, and responds with practical obedience.

Psalm

Psalm 46:10 (KJV)

10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

Prayer

God of peace, free me from the restlessness that keeps me from hearing you. Teach me to remain silent before you. Speak deep within me and help me recognize your whisper amid the noise of my life. Amen.

A thought to keep

God’s voice does not need to be loud to carry authority.
