Volume 1 · Week 3 — Thirsting for God

Day 17 — God in the Wilderness

Main verse

“O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;”

— Psalm 63:1 (KJV)

Meditation

The wilderness is a place where familiar resources disappear. It offers neither abundance nor immediate shelter. In spiritual life, we also pass through wilderness seasons: prayer becomes difficult, the Bible seems silent, and yesterday’s certainties no longer sustain us in the same way.

Then we may believe that God has abandoned us. Yet David addresses his song to God from a dry land. His surroundings offer no reassuring sign, but his thirst itself becomes a prayer.

The wilderness reveals what truly sustains us. It strips away certain illusions and brings us face to face with our essential needs. This experience can be painful, but it is not without God’s presence. In the wilderness, Israel discovered a God who gave each day’s bread and brought water from the rock.

We must not idealize difficult seasons. The wilderness exhausts and disorients us. But there we can receive a simpler faith, less dependent on emotions and immediate results.

If we cannot find a long prayer today, let us simply offer our thirst to God. He understands unfinished words and silences. The One who meets us in fertile gardens also knows how to walk with us through dry lands.

Psalm

Psalm 63:1–11 (KJV)

1 O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; 2 To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary. 3 Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee. 4 Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name. 5 My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips: 6 When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches. 7 Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice. 8 My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me. 9 But those that seek my soul, to destroy it , shall go into the lower parts of the earth. 10 They shall fall by the sword: they shall be a portion for foxes. 11 But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that sweareth by him shall glory: but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.

Prayer

Lord, my inner life sometimes seems dry and silent. When I no longer feel Your nearness, do not let me conclude that You are absent. Receive my thirst as a prayer. Give me today the bread and water I need to keep walking with You. Amen.

A thought to keep

Even in the wilderness, my thirst can lead me toward God.
