Volume 1 · Week 8 — Grace That Lifts Us Up

Day 56 — Grace That Carries Us to the End

Main verse

“[…] he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”

— Philippians 1:6 (excerpt) (KJV)

Meditation

We often begin with enthusiasm. A new decision, a spiritual habit, or an important commitment fills us with hope. Then come weariness, slow progress, and setbacks. We discover that transformation is rarely as quick as we imagined.

This slowness can discourage us. We compare who we are with who we thought we ought to be. Faced with the distance that remains, we sometimes end up doubting whether we have grown at all.

Yet Paul reminds us that the work begun within us belongs first to God. We are invited to respond, persevere, and make faithful choices, but we are not solely responsible for our transformation. The same grace that called us continues to work within us.

God’s work sometimes remains invisible. A buried seed seems to produce nothing, yet it slowly opens beneath the soil. In the same way, God may be forming patience within us, deepening our compassion, or weakening an old habit before the changes become clearly visible.

This does not mean that all resistance will disappear without our participation. Grace does not make us passive. Instead, it teaches us to work with God without believing that everything depends on our willpower.

Let us look at the road already traveled without pride and the road still ahead without despair. Our incomplete progress does not prove that God has abandoned us. We are still a work in progress, and the Master has not left his work.

Let us therefore entrust to him what remains unfinished. The One who lifted us up also has the patience to lead us to the end.

Psalm

Psalm 138:7–8 (KJV)

7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me. 8 The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for the work you have begun within me. Forgive my impatience with my slow progress and my fresh starts. Give me perseverance to move forward with you. I entrust to you what remains fragile, incomplete, or uncertain. Carry me by your grace and complete within me what accords with your will. Amen.

A thought to keep

I am still an unfinished work, but I remain in the hands of a faithful God.
