Volume 1 · Week 9 — God’s Forgiveness

Day 57 — Coming Out of Hiding

Main verse

“I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.”

— Psalm 32:5 (KJV)

Meditation

After doing wrong, our first impulse is often to hide. We look for an explanation, minimize the consequences, or avoid people who might confront us. We fear that the truth will destroy the image others have of us.

David describes the burden of this concealment. As long as he kept silent, his wrongdoing seemed to affect his whole life. What he refused to acknowledge did not disappear; it worked within him and robbed him of peace.

Then he stops defending himself: “I acknowledged my sin unto thee.” This admission gives God no new information. God already knew the truth. But David finally agrees to stand before him, without evasion or a mask.

Biblical confession is not humiliation imposed by a God who delights in seeing us brought low. It is a way out of hiding. It calls things by their names and opens a space where forgiveness can be received.

Acknowledging wrongdoing does not always remove its consequences. Some situations call for making amends, asking forgiveness, or accepting necessary boundaries. But we no longer have to carry both the weight of the wrong we have done and the weight of concealing it.

God does not ask us to wait until we have found perfect words. We can simply tell him what happened, what we wanted, and what we regret. Where truth is welcomed, grace begins its work of liberation.

Psalm

Psalm 32:1–11 (KJV)

1 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. 2 Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile. 3 When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long. 4 For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah. 5 I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah. 6 For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him. 7 Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah. 8 I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. 9 Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee. 10 Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the LORD, mercy shall compass him about. 11 Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.

Prayer

Lord, you already know what I sometimes try to hide. Give me courage to come into your light without excuses or a mask. Help me acknowledge my faults, repair what can be repaired, and sincerely receive your forgiveness. Lead me out of concealment so that I may walk with you in truth. Amen.

A thought to keep

Confession does not imprison me in my wrongdoing; it opens the door through which I leave it behind.
