Volume 1 · Week 7 — The God Who Knows Us

Day 43 — Known Even in Secret

Main verse

“O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.”

— Psalm 139:1 (KJV)

Meditation

We spend part of our lives trying to be understood. We explain our intentions, defend our choices, and search for words that can express what we feel. Yet even those closest to us cannot always grasp what is happening within us.

Some parts of our hearts remain difficult to share. There we keep fears we dare not admit, wounds that are still tender, conflicting thoughts, or memories we would rather forget. Sometimes we no longer understand even ourselves.

Yet the psalmist affirms, “Thou hast searched me, and known me.” God knows more than our name, our face, or the visible events of our story. He sees what lies behind our silences. He understands the reasons we cannot explain and the tears that find no way out.

This knowledge might frighten us if it were not joined with love. But God’s gaze is not that of a cold observer searching for a fault. It is the gaze of the Creator who knows his handiwork and refuses to abandon it.

Before him, we do not need to keep up appearances. We can come with the whole truth of who we are: what is beautiful, what is fragile, and what still needs to be transformed. Being known by God does not mean being exposed to humiliation; it means no longer having to bear the weight of secrecy alone.

Today, we can open before him a part of ourselves that no one else sees. He already knew it, but he waits for us to entrust it to him.

Psalm

Psalm 139:1–12 (KJV)

1 O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. 2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. 3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. 4 For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether. 5 Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it. 7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? 8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. 9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. 11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. 12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.

Prayer

Lord, you know me better than I know myself. You see my thoughts, my wounds, my contradictions, and my deepest desires. Free me from the fear of being honest before you. May your gaze bring light to what needs healing and transform what still needs to grow. Amen.

A thought to keep

God knows my whole story, and nothing he discovers compels him to turn away from me.
