Volume 1 · Week 6 — Learning to Pray

Day 42 — When Prayer Becomes a Way of Life

Main verse

“Pray without ceasing.”

— 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (KJV)

Meditation

This appeal may seem impossible. We must work, think, care for others, and fulfill many responsibilities. How could we pray without interruption?

Paul does not ask us either to keep speaking words continually or to withdraw from ordinary life. He invites us to nurture a communion that accompanies our whole day.

Prayer can begin in a moment of silence and continue amid our activities. A worry becomes an inward request. Good news turns into thanksgiving. A difficult encounter prompts a plea for wisdom. A beautiful landscape awakens praise.

To pray without ceasing is to learn not to separate God’s presence entirely from our daily lives. We do not meet him only at a particular hour or in a dedicated place. We can turn to him in a kitchen, a car, an office, a waiting room, or at the bedside of someone who is ill.

This communion does not always require complete sentences. A name spoken inwardly, a verse recalled to mind, a sigh, or a simple “Lord, be with me” can become a true prayer.

It nevertheless remains important to set aside particular times to listen to God and speak to him attentively. The prayer that accompanies the whole day is nourished by these deeper appointments. Just as human relationships need real conversations, our communion with God cannot rest solely on passing thoughts.

This week has reminded us that prayer is more than an activity to complete. Little by little, it becomes a way of life: the heart remains turned toward God amid joys, decisions, work, and trials.

Psalm

Psalm 16:7–11 (KJV)

7 I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons. 8 I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. 10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

Prayer

Lord, teach me to live each day in your presence. May my joys become thanksgiving, my worries supplication, and my decisions a search for your wisdom. Give me times of deep communion with you, then help me keep my heart turned toward you amid my daily activities. Amen.

A thought to keep

Prayer becomes a way of life when every moment can be turned toward God.
