Day 41 — Holding Others in Prayer

Main verse

“[…] pray one for another […]”

— James 5:16 (excerpt) (KJV)

Meditation

Sometimes we do not know how to help someone who is suffering. Their difficulties exceed our resources. Our advice seems inadequate, and our words might even add to what they already carry. One quiet but profound act remains: bringing them before God.

Praying for someone does not mean trying to direct their life from a distance or asking God to change them according to our preferences. It means entrusting them to the One who knows them better than we do. It means recognizing that we are not their savior and that their story does not rest entirely in our hands.

Intercession can be very simple. We can speak a name, describe a sorrow, or simply say, “Lord, take care of this person.” When we do not know what to ask, the Spirit accompanies us in our weakness. God understands what our words cannot express.

Holding someone in prayer also transforms us. A person for whom we pray regularly gradually becomes more than a problem, an adversary, or an abstract concern. We learn to look at them with greater compassion.

Yet prayer must not replace the action we can take. After praying for someone who is lonely, we can call them. After bringing someone in need before God, we can share what we have. True prayer sometimes opens our own hands.

Today, someone’s name may come to mind. Let us speak it tenderly, then remain in silence for a few moments. The person we cannot carry on our own can be entrusted to God’s faithfulness.

Psalm

Psalm 20:1–5 (KJV)

1 The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee; 2 Send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion; 3 Remember all thy offerings, and accept thy burnt sacrifice; Selah. 4 Grant thee according to thine own heart, and fulfil all thy counsel. 5 We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners: the LORD fulfil all thy petitions.

Prayer

Lord, today I entrust to you the people who are on my heart. You know their visible needs and their hidden wounds. Surround them with your presence; give them the strength, wisdom, and help they need. Show me, too, whether I can become a practical answer to my own prayer. Amen.

A thought to keep

Praying for someone means bringing their name before God without presuming to direct their story.
