Volume 1 · Week 7 — The God Who Knows Us

Day 44 — He Calls Me by Name

Main verse

“[…] Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.”

— Isaiah 43:1 (excerpt) (KJV)

Meditation

A name is more than a way of distinguishing one person from another. It carries an identity, a history, relationships, and sometimes wounds as well. Hearing our name spoken with affection can remind us that we are recognized and that our presence matters to someone.

God says to his people, “I have called thee by thy name.” He is not addressing an anonymous crowd. He knows personally those whom he accompanies. In the vastness of creation and among the countless voices raised to him, no life is lost in the multitude.

Yet there are times when we feel invisible. Our efforts go unnoticed, our pain remains misunderstood, and no one seems to notice our absence. We may then wonder whether our existence still truly matters.

God’s word answers this fear: “Thou art mine.” This is not a possession that confines, but a belonging that protects and restores. We belong to the One who created us, sought us, and called us. Our worth therefore does not depend entirely on the changing opinions of others.

Jesus showed this personal attention. He saw Zacchaeus in the tree, heard Bartimaeus amid the crowd, and called Mary by name before the empty tomb. Each time, someone who risked disappearing behind a label, suffering, or wrongdoing found dignity again.

God still calls us by name today. He does not confuse us with our past, our weakness, or the image others have formed of us. He knows our true identity and invites us to live in the security of his love.

Psalm

Psalm 147:1–5 (KJV)

1 Praise ye the LORD: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely. 2 The LORD doth build up Jerusalem: he gathereth together the outcasts of Israel. 3 He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds. 4 He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names. 5 Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.

Prayer

Lord, when I feel forgotten or insignificant, remind me that you know my name. You see my story, my quiet efforts, and my hidden wounds. Help me not to seek all my worth in the opinions of others. May the certainty that I belong to you bring me peace and make me attentive to those who also feel invisible. Amen.

A thought to keep

I am never anonymous before God: he knows me and calls me by name.
