Volume 1 · Week 12 — Waiting for God’s Time
Day 82 — Waiting Like a Watchman
Main verse
“My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning.”
— Psalm 130:6 (KJV)
Meditation
The watchman passes through the darkest hours of the night. He cannot make the sun rise sooner. Yet he remains attentive because he knows that morning will come.
This image teaches us a waiting that is neither resignation nor restlessness. The watchman does not control the dawn, but stays awake. He watches, listens, and faithfully fulfills the responsibility entrusted to him.
We easily fall into two extremes. Sometimes we try to hasten the answer through worry and scattered efforts. At other times, we abandon every responsibility under the pretext of waiting for God.
Biblical hope follows another road. It acknowledges what we cannot produce while remaining attentive to what we can do. A person waiting for employment can keep preparing and searching. Someone hoping for reconciliation can work on their own attitudes without forcing the other person to return.
Waiting like a watchman also means learning to notice the first signs of light. The final answer may not yet be here, but a small opening, renewed strength, or an unexpected conversation may suggest that the night is not standing still.
The watchman does not confuse present darkness with an endless night. His trust rests on a reality he cannot yet fully see, but whose faithfulness he knows: morning returns.
Today, we may not be able to hasten the dawn. Yet we can remain awake, faithful, and willing. God will give us light as it appears and the strength we need to pass through the hours that remain.
Psalm
Psalm 130:1–8 (KJV)
1 Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O LORD. 2 Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications. 3 If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? 4 But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared. 5 I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. 6 My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning. 7 Let Israel hope in the LORD: for with the LORD there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption. 8 And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

Prayer
Lord, teach me to wait like a watchman. Guard me from the restlessness that tries to force the morning and the discouragement that stops watching. Show me the responsibility that remains mine and make me attentive to the first signs of your light. Amen.
A thought to keep
I cannot make the day dawn, but I can stay awake until the light arrives.
