Volume 1 · Week 8 — Grace That Lifts Us Up

Day 52 — Grace Runs to Meet Us

Main verse

“[…] But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.”

— Luke 15:20 (excerpt) (KJV)

Meditation

The son returns with a carefully prepared speech. He has left home, squandered his inheritance, and discovered too late the value of what he abandoned. On the way back, he no longer imagines himself worthy to be called a son. He hopes only to find a place among the servants.

But his father sees him while he is still far away.

Before the son reaches the house, before he finishes his confession, and before he can propose his new status, the father runs toward him. In a society where a respectable man would not behave this way in public, this gesture reveals a love willing to expose itself to recover the lost child.

The father hears the confession but refuses the new identity his son wanted to impose upon himself. He will not be tolerated as an inferior servant. He will be welcomed as a son restored to life.

We sometimes approach God with the same speech: “I am no longer worthy. Just let me stay at a distance.” We believe our wrongdoing has changed our name forever. Yet grace does more than allow us to return; it comes to meet us.

God does not celebrate our wandering. He celebrates our return. He removes the garments of shame and restores a belonging we thought we had lost.

Perhaps we are still far away today. We have not put our whole lives in order, and our words remain hesitant. But the Father has already seen us. The road home is not traveled under the cold gaze of an impatient judge. It is traveled under the gaze of a Father moved with compassion.

Psalm

Psalm 86:5–13 (KJV)

5 For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee. 6 Give ear, O LORD, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications. 7 In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me. 8 Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works. 9 All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship before thee, O Lord; and shall glorify thy name. 10 For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone. 11 Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name. 12 I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore. 13 For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.

Prayer

Compassionate Father, I return to you with my regrets, my losses, and my imperfect words. When shame tells me I am no longer worthy of your love, remind me that your grace comes to meet me. Restore within me the joy of belonging to you, and teach me to welcome with compassion those who are also seeking the way home. Amen.

A thought to keep

When I take a step toward God, I discover that his grace is already running to meet me.
