Volume 1 · Week 8 — Grace That Lifts Us Up
Day 53 — Grace Sufficient for Today
Main verse
“[…] My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. […]”
— 2 Corinthians 12:9 (excerpt) (KJV)
Meditation
Paul had asked God to remove a persistent trial he called a “thorn in the flesh.” Three times he prayed for deliverance. Yet the answer he received was not the immediate disappearance of his difficulty: “My grace is sufficient for thee.”
These words can unsettle us. We would often like grace to take the form of swift healing, an open door, or a problem finally resolved. But God sometimes grants a different grace: strength to continue without being crushed by what remains.
Sufficient grace is not always grace we feel abundantly. It may come as the courage to get up, the presence of an attentive person, a biblical word recalled at the right moment, or a quiet peace amid uncertainty.
God does not ask Paul to pretend that his weakness is pleasant. He reveals that it will not prevent divine power from working. Weakness is no longer something to be ashamed of; it can become the place where he learns to depend on God.
We spend much energy hiding our limits. We fear that they diminish our worth or make our service useless. Yet God does not wait for us to become invulnerable before working through us.
The promised grace is sufficient for today. Tomorrow will receive its own. We do not need to gather now all the strength required for the months ahead. We can ask for this day’s bread, courage, and light.
Psalm
Psalm 73:23–26 (KJV)
23 Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand. 24 Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. 25 Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. 26 My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.

Prayer
Lord, you know what I wish would disappear from my life. I ask you for deliverance, but I also ask for grace to endure when the trial remains. Free me from shame about my limits. Reveal your strength in the midst of my weakness and give me what I need for today. Amen.
A thought to keep
Grace does not always remove the trial immediately; it keeps me from being abandoned within it.
