Volume 1 · Week 8 — Grace That Lifts Us Up

Day 54 — Grace Enters the House

Main verse

“[…] Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.”

— Luke 19:5 (excerpt) (KJV)

Meditation

Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus without being seen. Short in stature, he had climbed a tree, perhaps also to avoid a crowd that despised him. As a chief tax collector, he represented a system associated with Roman occupation, abuses, and personal enrichment.

Yet Jesus stops beneath his tree and calls him by name. He does not first ask him to prove that he deserves this attention. He simply announces, “To day I must abide at thy house.”

Grace thus enters Zacchaeus’ life before he has made amends. But this presence soon brings profound change. The man who once accumulated begins to give; the man who had caused harm chooses to make restitution.

Transformation does not arise from public humiliation. It begins when a despised man discovers that he can still be seen differently. Jesus does not deny his responsibilities, but refuses to confine him to his reputation.

We, too, can keep parts of our lives at a distance from God. We watch him from our tree without wanting him to enter the house: our finances, our relationships, our ambitions, or our secret habits. Yet grace wants to do more than wave to us from afar. It desires to dwell in the places where our choices take shape.

When Jesus enters, he does not destroy Zacchaeus’ dignity. He restores it so that this man can at last act justly. Grace received then becomes grace that makes amends.

Today, Jesus may be calling us to come down from our hiding place and open a particular door in our lives to him.

Psalm

Psalm 15:1–5 (KJV)

1 LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? 2 He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. 3 He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour. 4 In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not. 5 He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.

Lord Jesus, you know the parts of my life I keep at a distance from your gaze. Call me out of my hiding places and come dwell in every room of my inner life. May your grace transform my choices and give me courage to repair the wrongs I have caused. Amen.
