Volume 1 · Week 11 — Trusting Amid Uncertainty

Day 75 — Holding Our Plans with Open Hands

Main verse

“For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”

— James 4:15 (KJV)

Meditation

Making plans is an expression of responsibility. We organize our work, prepare for the future, and choose a direction. The Bible does not condemn this foresight. Yet it reminds us that our plans remain limited by a reality we do not fully control.

James addresses people who speak about tomorrow with absolute confidence: they will go to a city, spend a year there, do business, and make money. Everything seems settled already. But they forget life’s fragility and God’s place in it.

Saying “If the Lord will” should not become a formula added mechanically to every sentence. It is an inward attitude: we prepare our plans seriously while holding them with open hands.

A plan held too tightly can end up defining our worth. If it succeeds, we feel important; if it fails, our whole identity seems to collapse. Trust allows us to work wholeheartedly without making one particular outcome our only source of security.

Holding our plans with open hands also means accepting that they may need correction. New information, wise counsel, or an unforeseen circumstance may invite us to reconsider what we decided.

This willingness is not indecision. We can choose, act, and persevere while acknowledging that God remains free to lead differently.

Today, let us bring him our calendars, our ambitions, and the outcomes we hope for. Let us ask for strength to work faithfully, then for peace to leave the future in his hands.

Psalm

Psalm 31:14–15 (KJV)

14 But I trusted in thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my God. 15 My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.

Prayer

Lord, I bring you my plans and my hopes. Give me discipline to prepare well what has been entrusted to me, without believing I control the future. Correct my plans when they stray from your will, and grant me peace when circumstances change them. I place in your hands what I cannot guarantee. Amen.

A thought to keep

I can prepare for the future seriously without trying to possess it.
