Volume 1 · Week 11 — Trusting Amid Uncertainty
Day 74 — When a Door Closes
Main verse
“Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,”
— Acts 16:6 (KJV)
Meditation
Paul and his companions had a worthy plan: to proclaim the gospel in new regions. Yet twice the road they intended to take was closed to them. The account does not explain exactly how they understood this hindrance. It simply shows that they had to change their route.
A closed door is often difficult to accept, especially when our intention seems good. We had prayed, prepared, and moved forward sincerely. Rejection, failure, or delay may then make us feel that all our efforts have been wasted.
We must not automatically regard every obstacle as a direct intervention from God. Some doors close because of our mistakes, human decisions, or the ordinary realities of life. Discernment requires time, prayer, and sometimes the counsel of others.
But a closed door is not always the end of the calling. For Paul, it became a redirection. A vision pointed him toward Macedonia, where new Christian communities would be born. What looked like an interruption was preparing another road.
In uncertainty, we can become so attached to a particular method that we confuse our plan with God’s will. Yet the mission may remain while the route changes.
When a door closes, let us take time to listen before forcing it open or abandoning everything. God may be inviting us to wait, correct something, or look in a direction we had not considered.
We do not yet know what every obstacle means. But we can remain willing. A road closing does not mean that God has stopped leading.
Psalm
Psalm 25:4–5 (KJV)
4 Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. 5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.

Prayer
Lord, you know the closed doors that disappoint or disorient me. Give me wisdom not to attribute every obstacle too quickly to your will, but also humility to accept another direction. Keep my heart willing and lead me toward the road where I can serve you faithfully. Amen.
A thought to keep
A closed door can change my route without bringing God’s calling to an end.
