Volume 1 · Week 11 — Trusting Amid Uncertainty
Day 73 — When God Works Unseen
Main verse
“[…] and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”
— Esther 4:14 (excerpt) (KJV)
Meditation
The book of Esther has a remarkable feature: God’s name is never directly mentioned. Yet throughout the story, seemingly ordinary events come together: a queen is chosen, a conspiracy is discovered, a king spends a sleepless night, and a threatened people finds a way of deliverance.
Esther has no revelation explaining everything that is happening. Mordecai says only, “Who knoweth?” He does not claim to know with certainty the reasons for her position. Yet he discerns that a responsibility may be entrusted to her at this decisive hour.
We would often like to recognize God’s hand clearly while events unfold. But some seasons resemble the book of Esther: God seems silent, circumstances remain ambiguous, and we must make a decision without having every answer.
Trusting does not mean automatically attributing every event to divine intervention. Even when we cannot perceive his work, we believe that God can open possibilities, bring people together, and entrust us with a share of responsibility.
Esther does not remain passive. She fasts, asks the people to fast with her, accepts the risk, and goes before the king. Trust in providence does not keep her from acting; it gives her courage to do what lies before her.
We may understand only later the significance of an encounter, a delay, or an unexpected door. For now, one question is enough: what faithfulness does this moment require of me?
When God seems to be working unseen, we can keep walking in the light we have already received.
Psalm
Psalm 121:1–8 (KJV)
1 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. 2 My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. 3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. 4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. 6 The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. 7 The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. 8 The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

Prayer
Lord, when I cannot clearly discern your work, keep me from concluding too quickly that you are absent. Give me discernment to recognize my responsibility and courage to act faithfully. Guide me in what I can do today and teach me to entrust to you what remains hidden. Amen.
A thought to keep
Even when I cannot see God’s hand, I can faithfully do what he places before me.
