Volume 1 · Week 10 — Walking by Faith
Day 68 — The Faith That Says, “Even If…”
Main verse
“If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.”
— Daniel 3:17–18 (KJV)
Meditation
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stand before a furnace. The king demands that they worship a golden image or be thrown into the fire. Their answer expresses remarkable faith: God can deliver them, but even if he does not, they will remain faithful to him.
They do not doubt God’s power. They simply refuse to dictate how he must act. Their faithfulness does not depend on the outcome they hope for.
We sometimes associate faith with certainty that everything will end as we wish. We believe that if we pray with enough trust, the illness will be healed, the door will open, or the danger will disappear. When the outcome is different, we wonder whether our faith was insufficient.
The three young Hebrews show us a deeper trust. They can say both, “God is able,” and, “Even if deliverance does not take the form we expect, we will remain devoted to him.”
This faith is neither fatalistic nor unfeeling. It asks with hope, looks for a way through, and acknowledges divine power. Yet ultimately it rests on God’s character rather than on a particular answer.
We do not always know how God will intervene. He may deliver us from the trial or sustain us within it. In Daniel’s account, the three men enter the fire, but they are not alone there. A mysterious presence walks with them in the midst of the flames.
Faith does not always receive a guarantee of avoiding the furnace. It receives the assurance that God remains faithful, even in the fire.
Psalm
Psalm 27:1–5 (KJV)
1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. 3 Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. 4 One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple. 5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.

Prayer
Lord, I believe that you are powerful, and I bring you with trust what I hope for. But teach me to love you beyond the outcome I await. If the road passes through fire, remain beside me. Give me a faith that asks with hope and stays faithful even when your answer takes another form. Amen.
A thought to keep
Faith affirms that God can deliver me; faithfulness remains even when deliverance takes another form.
