Volume 1 · Week 7 — The God Who Knows Us
Day 48 — He Gathers Unseen Tears
Main verse
“[…] put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?”
— Psalm 56:8 (excerpt) (KJV)
Meditation
Not all tears fall in front of others. Some remain hidden behind a smile, a responsibility to fulfill, or a reassuring answer: “Everything is fine.” Sometimes we learn to go on with our day while a quiet pain remains within us.
The psalmist brings God the striking image of tears gathered in a bottle. In the ancient world, a skin bottle held what was precious and must not be lost. In this way, he affirms that no tear is insignificant in God’s sight.
We may forget the exact date of a wound, but our hearts still bear its trace. A humiliating remark, a separation, a bereavement, or a long season of loneliness may continue to influence the way we live. Even when no one notices, God knows this weight.
His presence requires us neither to deny our sorrow nor to display strength we do not possess. Faith makes room for lament. Jesus himself wept before Lazarus’ tomb. His tears show that divine compassion does not keep its distance from human suffering.
God does not promise that all our pain will disappear immediately. Yet he promises that it will be neither forgotten nor despised. In his hands, tears can become a prayer when words are no longer enough.
We can also ask God to make us attentive to hidden suffering. Behind a difficult attitude or a long silence, there may be someone carrying alone tears that no one sees.
Psalm
Psalm 56:3–13 (KJV)
3 What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. 4 In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me. 5 Every day they wrest my words: all their thoughts are against me for evil. 6 They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul. 7 Shall they escape by iniquity? in thine anger cast down the people, O God. 8 Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book? 9 When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me. 10 In God will I praise his word: in the LORD will I praise his word. 11 In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me. 12 Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee. 13 For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

Prayer
Lord, you know the tears I have shed and those I still hold back. Receive my sorrow without diminishing it. Comfort what remains wounded within me and give me strength to move forward. Make me attentive, too, to the quiet pain of those I meet. Amen.
A thought to keep
