Volume 1 · Week 7 — The God Who Knows Us
Day 49 — Allowing God to Know and Transform Us
Main verse
“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
— Psalm 139:23–24 (KJV)
Meditation
Psalm 139 begins with an affirmation: God searches us and knows us. It ends with an invitation: “Search me, O God.” The psalmist thus freely welcomes the light he first acknowledged.
Being known by God means more than being comforted. His gaze also reveals what needs to be transformed within us: a resentment we nurture, a fear guiding our decisions, a destructive habit, or a motive we would rather not examine.
We may fear this light and try to protect certain parts of our lives. Yet God does not reveal truth to humiliate us. He brings it to light to set us free. A physician examines a wound not to condemn the patient, but to begin healing.
The psalmist does not simply say, “Show me what is wrong.” He adds, “Lead me.” God’s knowledge therefore opens a path. His light does not abandon us to face our contradictions alone; it invites us to move forward with him.
This transformation takes time. Today, God may draw our attention to a single attitude or choice. He does not ask us to put our entire lives right in an instant, but to keep our hearts open to his work.
We can now come before God as we are, without hiding behind a mask or running away. The One who knows everything about us is also the One who loves us, forgives us, and leads us.
Psalm
Psalm 139:13–24 (KJV)
13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. 14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. 15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. 16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. 17 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! 18 If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee. 19 Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men. 20 For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain. 21 Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee? 22 I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies. 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Prayer
Lord, I open my heart to you. Show me gently what must be acknowledged, left behind, or transformed. Keep me from fleeing your light and from condemning myself. Forgive me, heal me, and lead me step by step along your path. Amen.
A thought to keep
The God who knows me completely does not expose me to humiliate me; he brings me light to transform me.
