Volume 1 · Week 13 — The Joy of Salvation
Day 91 — Abiding in the Joy of Salvation
Main verse
“These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.”
— John 15:11 (KJV)
Meditation
Jesus speaks of his joy at the very moment he is preparing his disciples for his departure. This joy therefore does not depend on a succession of easy days. It arises from fellowship with him and remains when his words dwell in the heart.
In the image of the vine and the branches, joy grows from a simple verb: abide. A branch does not produce its fruit through restless effort. It receives the life flowing from the vine and lets that life bear fruit over time.
“That my joy might remain in you.”
Abiding in Christ does not mean continually maintaining an intense emotion. It means returning to his word, receiving his love, keeping his commandments, and allowing our relationship with him to guide our choices. Some days will be bright; others will still carry the weight of weariness or grief.
Christian joy can then take quiet forms: the peace that accompanies a right decision, gratitude amid an ordinary task, courage to serve, or the ability to recognize a grace we would once have overlooked.
This joy is shared. Jesus connects abiding in his love with the command to love one another. A joy closed in on itself eventually dries up; a joy offered becomes encouragement, hospitality, and hope for those who walk beside us.
When our hearts grow heavy, we do not need to manufacture a happy appearance. We can simply return to the source: open the Word, pray honestly, receive the presence of a brother or sister, and remember that our lives remain joined to Christ.
This week and the first volume thus come to a close: with an invitation to abide rather than a command to appear joyful. The joy of salvation is a fruit we receive, cultivate, and share by remaining united with the One who is its source. The journey will continue, but this invitation is already complete: remain joined to Christ, day by day.
Psalm
Psalm 16:7–11 (KJV)
7 I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons. 8 I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. 10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, keep me united with you. When my joy weakens, bring me back to your word and your love. Grow within me a true joy, able to pass through difficult days, nourish service, and become hope for others. Amen.
A thought to keep
The joy of salvation stays alive when I remain joined to Christ and share it.
