Volume 1 · Week 6 — Learning to Pray

Day 37 — Praying Without a Mask

Main verse

“Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.”

— Psalm 62:8 (KJV)

Meditation

We learn very early to present an acceptable image of ourselves to others. We conceal our weaknesses, choose our words carefully, and sometimes try to seem stronger or more spiritual than we are.

This habit can enter even our prayer life. We speak to God as though we had to show him our best face. We use beautiful phrases while avoiding what is really troubling us.

Yet God already knows us. He sees our confused thoughts, our contradictions, our wounds, and the desires we dare not express. No mask can deceive him, and no honest admission can surprise him.

In Jesus’ parable, the Pharisee presents God with a list of his merits. The tax collector has nothing to show. He simply acknowledges his need for mercy. Jesus declares that this man goes home justified.

True prayer begins when we stop defending our image. We can tell God, “I am afraid. I am angry. I doubt. I am jealous. I am hurting. I do not understand.” Such honesty is not a lack of faith. It is a mark of trust.

God does not require us to come as we ought to be. He invites us to come as we are, so that his grace can transform us.

Psalm

Psalm 139:1 (KJV)

1 O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.

Prayer

Lord, you know me completely. I have nothing to hide from you. Give me courage to entrust my real thoughts, fears, faults, and wounds to you. Welcome me in your grace and transform what I cannot change alone. Amen.

A thought to keep

I can come before God without a mask, because he knows me and welcomes me.
