Volume 1 · Week 9 — God’s Forgiveness

Day 63 — At Peace with God

Main verse

“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:”

— Romans 5:1 (KJV)

Meditation

God’s forgiveness does more than erase a debt. It restores a relationship. Those who were hiding can return; those who feared judgment can draw near; those who thought themselves rejected discover that a place is still offered to them.

Paul calls this reality “peace with God.” He is not speaking of a passing emotion or a life now protected from every difficulty. He describes reconciliation: hostility has ended and fellowship has been restored through Jesus Christ.

We sometimes go on living as though God were our adversary. Every trial seems like punishment, every silence proof of rejection. We then try to regain his favor through our efforts, our sacrifices, or our guilt.

But in Christ, we do not work to persuade God to welcome us. We live from a welcome already offered. Obedience is no longer the price of forgiveness; it is the grateful response of a reconciled heart.

This peace may slowly find its way into our inner lives. Our emotions do not always follow immediately what faith receives. Sometimes we must return several times to the same promise: “I can draw near to God. I am no longer condemned.”

Let us finally lay down the weapons we turn against ourselves. We need not deny our faults or their consequences. But we can stop living as strangers beside the One who has reconciled us.

Not everything around us is necessarily resolved when we receive peace with God. Yet amid what remains unfinished, we have found the way home again.

Psalm

Psalm 85:1–8 (KJV)

1 LORD, thou hast been favourable unto thy land: thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob. 2 Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, thou hast covered all their sin. Selah. 3 Thou hast taken away all thy wrath: thou hast turned thyself from the fierceness of thine anger. 4 Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward us to cease. 5 Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? wilt thou draw out thine anger to all generations? 6 Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee? 7 Shew us thy mercy, O LORD, and grant us thy salvation. 8 I will hear what God the LORD will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly.

Prayer

Father, thank you for reconciling me to yourself through Jesus Christ. When fear or guilt makes me live as though I were still rejected, bring me back to your promise. Teach me to walk in peace, obey you out of gratitude, and draw near to you with trust. Amen.

A thought to keep

Forgiveness does more than close the record of my wrongdoing; it brings me back into the peace of God’s presence.
