Day 3 — Leaving Behind What Holds Us Back

Main verse

“[…] forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark […]”

— Philippians 3:13–14 (excerpt) (KJV)

Meditation

Not everything in the past needs to be forgotten. Some memories teach us; others keep gratitude alive. But certain experiences become chains when we allow them to define our future.

It may be a wrong for which we constantly blame ourselves, a hurtful remark we still hear, a missed opportunity, or even an old success to which we remain attached. The past then takes up so much room that the present can no longer breathe.

The apostle Paul does not pretend to have no history. Instead, he chooses not to live facing backward. He looks toward the One who is still calling him. God’s voice does not shut us inside what we once were; it invites us to discover what His grace can still accomplish.

Leaving the past behind does not mean denying, erasing, or despising our story. It means refusing to let it become our master. We can entrust its wounds, regrets, and former glories to God, then turn toward the road that remains open.

Today we may not have the strength to make a great change. But we can loosen our grip and entrust to God what we no longer wish to carry alone.

Psalm

Psalm 32:1–7 (KJV)

1 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. 2 Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile. 3 When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long. 4 For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah. 5 I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD ; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah. 6 For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him. 7 Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.

Prayer

Lord, You know what in my past still keeps me from moving forward. Give me the courage to look honestly at my story without surrendering my future to it. Receive my regrets, my wounds, and my attachments. Free my hands to welcome what You want to give me now. Amen.

A thought to keep

My past belongs to my story, but it does not own my future.
