Volume 1 · Week 3 — Thirsting for God

Day 19 — Jesus Beside Our Wells

Main verse

“But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”

— John 4:14 (KJV)

Meditation

The woman of Samaria had come to perform an ordinary task: drawing water. She carried her jar, but also a complicated story, wounds, and perhaps the weight of other people’s judgment. Jesus was waiting beside the well.

He did not begin by lecturing her. He asked her for a drink. Then, as the conversation unfolded, He directed her attention toward a deeper thirst. This woman was seeking water for a few hours; Jesus spoke of a spring that could well up within her.

Christ also meets us beside our wells: the places to which we continually return, hoping to find what we need to live. He knows our habits, our relationships, and the parts of our story we would rather hide.

His gaze does not reduce us to our past. He brings truth to light without robbing us of dignity. The water He offers is not a reward reserved for perfectly ordered lives. It is a gift offered to thirsty people.

We can come to Him without waiting until we have resolved all our contradictions. Jesus does not despise our empty jar. He uses it to reveal the spring to us.

The encounter sometimes begins with a simple acknowledgment: ‘Lord, I have come back to this well, but I am still thirsty.’

Psalm

Psalm 27:7–10 (KJV)

7 Hear, O LORD , when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me. 8 When thou saidst , Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD , will I seek. 9 Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation. 10 When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You know the wells to which I return and the stories I carry in silence. Meet me without letting me hide behind appearances. Let the living water of Your grace, truth, and love well up within me. Help me receive the gaze that restores. Amen.
