Volume 1 · Week 12 — Waiting for God’s Time

Day 79 — Not Forcing the Promise

Main verse

“Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: […]”

— Psalm 37:7 (excerpt) (KJV)

Meditation

Waiting sometimes becomes so heavy that we try to produce for ourselves what God seems slow to accomplish. We do not necessarily give up the promise; instead, we try to help it come true according to our timetable.

Abraham and Sarah had received the promise of descendants. But the years passed, and their age made its fulfillment seem increasingly unlikely. Sarah then proposed that Abraham have a child with Hagar, her servant. This decision reflected a practice of their time, but it brought rivalry, humiliation, and suffering.

The account does not allow us to reduce Hagar to a mere consequence of someone else’s impatience. God saw her distress, heard her voice, and cared for her. But the story shows how our attempts to force an outcome can make others bear the weight of our fear.

Impatience narrows our vision. It persuades us that unless we act immediately, everything will be lost. We may then accept compromises, manipulate a situation, or rush a relationship simply to escape the discomfort of waiting.

Abraham and Sarah still had to live, work, and take initiative while they waited. Yet their decisions were not to contradict the trust the promise required.

Before forcing a door, it may be wise to stop and ask: does this action arise from carefully considered guidance, or only from my fear of delay? Who might suffer the consequences of my haste?

Trust sometimes accepts leaving a promise in God’s hands, even when the human timetable already seems to have run out.

Psalm

Psalm 37:3–9 (KJV)

3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. 4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. 5 Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. 6 And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday. 7 Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. 8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. 9 For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.

Prayer

Lord, when waiting becomes painful, keep me from decisions driven only by fear and impatience. Give me discernment to act at the right time and self-control not to force what still needs to mature. Protect others, too, from the consequences of my haste. Amen.

A thought to keep

Fear of delay must not push me to manufacture an answer that will wound tomorrow.
