Volume 1 · Week 2 — The Presence of God
Day 12 — A Presence in the Midst of Trial
Main verse
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me […].”
— Psalm 23:4 (excerpt) (KJV)
Meditation
The psalmist does not say that he will avoid every valley. He declares that he will not go through them alone. God’s presence is therefore not a promise of a life free from all suffering. It is the assurance that no darkness can take us beyond His sight.
In times of trial, that presence can be difficult to recognize. Pain fills every space. Prayers seem to go unanswered, and words of comfort may sound hollow. We must not condemn ourselves when we feel nothing. Faith can remain like an almost invisible thread: a sigh, a request for help, or the simple refusal to close our hearts completely.
On the cross, Jesus Himself knew suffering and the sense of abandonment. The God to whom we speak does not watch our pain from a distance. He drew near to human vulnerability and bore its weight.
We will not always know why a trial has come upon us. But we can ask for the strength we need for the present day. Sometimes God’s presence reaches us through a person, a word, or an unexpected moment of peace.
Even in the valley, the Shepherd keeps walking.
Psalm
Psalm 23 (KJV)
1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Prayer
Lord, in difficult hours I do not always know where to find You. When my faith grows fragile, hold me more firmly still. Give me the strength I need to get through this day. Help me recognize the signs, however quiet, of Your faithful presence. Amen.
A thought to keep
The valley is not a place without God; it is a place God walks through with me.
